Functional regulation of the mitochondrial presequence translocation complex
Most mitochondrial proteins are synthesised on cytosolic ribosomes and have to be transported into mitochondria. The translocase of the inner membrane (TIM23) complex processes the transport of virtually all mitochondrial matrix proteins and a considerable amount of inner membrane proteins across and into the inner membrane respectively. The central component of this translocon, the Tim23 channel, has to be tightly regulated to maintain the electrochemical potential that drives ATP synthesise. This project aims to elucidate the molecular details of functional regulation of the TIM23 complex.
